It being the run-up to Christmas, things have been getting rather busy lately. Whilst my wife and I were in the garden discussing my ever increasing list of jobs, the postman drove up, keen to catch us since he had a fairly bulky parcel amongst the stuff he had to deliver to us. He's a typical rural community postie, so when I happened to spot and comment on a camera with long reach lens on his van's passenger seat, he admitted he is a keen photographer himself. As the discussion went on, I found that he is a regular contributor to a local online news site, providing a birdwatching column for them. Not only are his photos captivating, his accompanying spiel is engaging, intelligent and informative. In short it's a gem.
Unsurprisingly, we swapped site details and he took a look at this site. Later, once he had had a chance to take a look around here, he thanked me and asked if he could perhaps pick up a few tips. This from a man who has proven his ability already over several years of ornithological postings. So that's me well and truly surprised, both at his humility and, just as importantly, at the realisation of how much talent there is under our noses if we only choose to look. Suffice to say, he's welcome to any tips I can give, but I expect I'll be coming out of this all the richer.
